The clock struck two, the house was still,
A sudden frost crept up the sill.
The floorboards creaked outside my door,
A heavy step crossed the floor.
I held my breath and pulled the sheet,
Then tucked it tightly round my feet.
I told myself, “It’s just the wind,
Or branches moving, wild and thin.
Just shadows dancing on the blind,
Just tricks that haunt the sleepy mind.
It will be gone with morning light,
It’s only sounds from out the night.”
Tap, tap, tap – a quiet sound,
My heart began to race and pound.
The bedroom door swung open wide,
A rush of cold came rushing inside.
I closed my eyes and tried to pray,
And wished the dark would fade away.
Then softly on the wooden floor,
The tapping came back once more.
The mattress sank beside my head,
A frozen weight upon my bed.
A whisper brushed against my ear:
“You closed your eyes, but I am here.”
